Geoffrey Hinton aka the Godfather of AI pioneered the neural networks that power today’s artificial intelligence revolution. But where does AI go from here?

Geoffrey digs into the big questions like whether robots will take our jobs and if AI could someday outsmart humans.

While those working in roles involving repetitive tasks are in danger of being replaced by automation, Geoffrey recommends young people train for hands-on jobs that require dexterity and skill such as custom carpentry or plumbing.

“These big chatbots that are just replacing people whose job involves producing text, that’s never happened before. And I’m not sure how they can confidently predict that more jobs will be created than the number of jobs lost,” warns Geoffrey.

“The jobs that are going to survive AI for a long time are jobs where you have to be very adaptable and physically skilled, and plumbing’s that kind of a job because manual dexterity is hard for a machine to replicate,” added the computer scientist.

Geoffrey Hinton, the Godfather of AI, was in conversation with Nick Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic on Centre Stage at Collision 2023.
