Speed meets trust: The next era of competitive advantage
At Web Summit Lisbon 2025, Ms. Connie Loizos hosted Mr. David Faugno, CEO of 1Password, and Mr. Laurent Mekies, Team Principal & CEO of Oracle Red Bull Racing. Both new leaders discussed helming iconic brands. Mr. Faugno focused on preserving 1Password’s trust, relied upon by millions, while innovating for AI-driven future trends. Mr. Mekies emphasized empowering his 2000-person F1 organization and respecting its two-decade winning legacy.
Mr. Mekies stated leadership style is secondary to genuine care for people and fostering company culture. He humbly attributed team victories, like Max Verstappen’s Monza win, to the collective talent of his factory personnel, seeing his role as enabling their excellence. Mr. Faugno, with a six-year history at 1Password, aims to instill a culture of ambition, setting high standards while upholding core values for evolving security needs.
This forward-looking approach is vital for 1Password as AI reshapes digital interactions. Mr. Faugno’s leadership focuses on stretching the team’s capabilities while staying true to the brand’s foundational trust. This balance is key to remaining relevant and secure for customers in a rapidly changing technological landscape, ensuring continuous innovation and reliability.
Oracle Red Bull Racing faces a monumental challenge for 2026: designing and producing its own power unit with Ford for the first time. Mr. Mekies described this as a “crazy adventure,” building facilities and hiring 600 people from scratch to compete against seasoned F1 engine manufacturers. This long-term investment was balanced with improving the 2025 car’s performance after a difficult start.
Mr. Mekies anticipates that the extensive 2026 regulation changes will inevitably alter the Formula One competitive landscape. He expects Red Bull to “fight our way back up” as a new engine manufacturer. Despite anticipated difficulties, he expressed confidence in the team’s exceptional personnel and strategic partners, believing their combined expertise provides the crucial competitive edge needed to win.
Mr. Faugno introduced 1Password’s “extended access management,” empowering employees with autonomy over tools and work methods while ensuring robust security. This innovative approach recognizes that people are the new security perimeter in distributed environments. The aim is to reduce friction in accessing resources, making security seamless and efficient, especially with AI agents integrating into workflows.
The partnership between 1Password and Oracle Red Bull Racing exemplifies this synergy. Mr. Faugno explained 1Password helps the racing team gain a “1,000th off the space” by streamlining access to critical systems and data. Mr. Mekies confirmed 1Password enhances developer speed and security, facilitating seamless login/logout across complex systems like aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. This minimizes “noise” and maximizes focus on core business.
Addressing intellectual property compromise, Mr. Faugno emphasized that 1Password’s solution mitigates risks and reduces friction, making secure access simpler and faster. This empowers the team to operate efficiently and safely across 24 global races, hotels, and paddocks, ensuring continuity and performance even if one system fails. Both leaders leverage trust and innovation for sustained competitive advantage in their high-stakes industries.
