Brain-computer interfaces are coming. Are you ready?

Brain-computer interfaces could be the future of treating neurological and psychiatric conditions and soon lead to brain implants, according to neuroscientist Ana Maiques, co-founder and CEO of Neuroelectrics.
Imagine if you could have a digital copy of your brain stored in the cloud. Sounds like something from a Black Mirror episode, doesn’t it? This is real neuroscience being developed by medical device startup Neuroelectrics.
In this episode of The Next Stage, Neuroelectrics co-founder and CEO Ana Maiques talks about the concept of a digital ‘neuro twin’, a replica of your brain’s neural network that could be used to trial treatments before they are used by the actual patient.
Neuroelectrics is a neuroscience-based medical device company creating wearable devices that can stimulate or dampen electrical signals in the brain while giving the user real time feedback on brain activity.
Call it digital therapeutics, neuroelectric stimulation, or a brain-machine interface – it’s all part of the future of treating neurological and psychiatric conditions including pain, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, stroke, rehabilitation, depression and addictive disorders.
Ana thinks that these devices will evolve and be used to enhance brain power and, ultimately, change what it means to be human. In this episode, Ana also discusses the ethics of such technologies, especially when they ultimately evolve from wearable devices to brain implants.
Ana Maiques, co-founder and CEO of Neuroelectrics, was in conversation with Rob Pegoraro, a journalist with USA Today, on the Auto/Tech and TalkRobot stage at Web Summit 2022.
